If you’ve ever shared a WordPress Playground link and watched someone wonder where to click next, this is for you.
I’ve been experimenting with a new feature on pootleplayground.com called Guided Tours.

Open the link and you’ll be guided through WordPress step by step.
The idea is simple: instead of sharing a Playground and hoping people figure it out, you can now share a Playground that explains itself.
A Playground link should explain itself
WordPress Playground makes it incredibly easy to share a complete WordPress site with a single link.
But the moment someone opens it, they’re often on their own.
Students don’t know where to begin.
Clients are worried they’ll break something.
Plugin users miss the feature you wanted them to see.
Guided Tours aim to solve that problem.
Three ways to add onboarding to your Playground
When creating a Playground, you can now choose from:
No Tour Just the Playground itself.
Quick Intro A short orientation covering Dashboard, Pages, Appearance, and Plugins.
Quick Start A guided “Your First WordPress Site in 5 Minutes” walkthrough for complete beginners.
Custom Tour Build your own step-by-step experience with custom selectors, instructions, and page-to-page navigation.
That means you can go from:
“Here’s a WordPress Playground.”
to:
“Here’s a WordPress Playground. Follow these steps and you’ll understand exactly how it works.”
in a couple of clicks.
Teaching WordPress inside WordPress
The use cases that excite me most are:
- Educators creating interactive lessons
- Plugin and theme developers building guided demos
- Agencies creating client onboarding experiences
- Content creators building hands-on tutorials
Instead of sending people to a PDF, video, or help document, the instructions live inside WordPress itself.
The user learns by doing.
The tour travels with the Playground
The important bit is that the tour becomes part of the Playground.
Create a tour, share the link, and anyone who opens it gets the same guided experience.
A plugin demo becomes onboarding.
A course becomes an interactive lesson.
A client handoff becomes a guided walkthrough.
The guidance travels with the blueprint.
What happens when blueprints become lessons?
That’s the experiment I’m really interested in.
WordPress Playground blueprints can already create complete WordPress environments.
What if they could teach people how to use them too?
What if every demo, lesson, tutorial, or client handoff could include its own guided experience?
It feels like an interesting direction to explore.

This is very much an experiment at this stage. The core functionality is working well, but it’s still in beta and I’m sure there are a few rough edges waiting to be discovered.
If you try it and spot any glitches, strange behaviour, or things that could be improved, I’d love to hear about them.
I’d also love to know what you think of the broader idea. A WordPress Playground that doesn’t just show people a site, but actively teaches them how to use it.
Longer term, I’d love to see something like this on WordPress.org. Community blueprints, built-in tours, short links, and guided learning experiences that anyone could create and share.
