My thoughts on WordPress Core, Full Site Editing, Page Builders, and Balancing Client Needs

Last week I sat down and chatted to Jonathan Jernigan.

This is what we covered πŸ‘‡

  1. The WordPress community can be overly focused on tools rather than broader business factors. There are opportunities to get involved and influence project direction rather than just criticize.
  2. Agencies should consider their 3-5 year business strategy and market trends, then choose technology accordingly to reduce business risk. Being aligned with WordPress core reduces risk.
  3. WordPress core and Gutenberg are developing rapidly, moving towards making full site editing easier to use and more powerful. There is a lot of investment and skilled people working on it.
  4. Block themes will need to compete with classic themes on ease of use and power. Making them as easy as classic themes is critical for adoption. Currently they are more powerful but harder to use.
  5. There is a big gap in the market for a very simple page builder tailored to beginners on WordPress. Canva’s website builder demonstrates this opportunity.

Greetings Jamie and Happy New Year to you and your family. I trust it was a Happy Christmas. I was getting a bit concerned about you. But I see your latest entry is Dec 14 though I don’t see this on your YouTube page. Regardless. Looking forward to what WP has in store this year.
    Cheers John Duncan TX

    Hi Jamie,
I am interested in your course and learning FSE better. Right now I have been exploring using Astra or Blocksy with the WP core blocks and also other block plugins. My question is, is there any way to design a site for a client with FSE and then change user permissions on just the site editor? So they could still access pages and posts and edit content but not change template parts. I see this as the fundamental confusion with FSE but also the benefit of using an FSE theme instead of a classic or “hybrid” theme. TIA!

      Hi Kristin,

Yes, only Admins have access to the site editor πŸ™‚

      Kind regards,
      Jamie
