WordPress Introduces “AI Building Blocks

Based on James LePage’s post on the WordPress Core AI Blog – July 17, 2025

WordPress is laying the foundation for a smarter, more flexible future with the introduction of AI Building Blocks — a set of tools designed to integrate artificial intelligence into the platform in a consistent and open way.

These tools are aimed at both developers and non-developers, enabling anyone from bloggers to agencies to enhance their sites with powerful AI features.

🔧 What Are the “AI Building Blocks”?

The project is made up of four key components:

1. PHP AI Client SDK

A toolkit that allows WordPress to connect to different AI services (like ChatGPT or Claude) using a common interface. It gives users flexibility to choose their preferred AI provider, and makes it easier for developers to add AI-powered features.

2. Abilities API

A central directory that lists everything WordPress can do — from publishing posts to running plugins. This makes it easier for AI tools to understand and interact with your site’s features.

3. MCP Adapter (Model Context Protocol)

A translator between WordPress and AI assistants. It uses the Abilities API to allow AI agents to interact with your website — such as suggesting content edits, handling tasks, or building automations.

4. AI Experiments Plugin

A plugin that brings all the Building Blocks together in one place. It lets users and developers try out AI tools inside WordPress — from visual workflows to AI-powered content suggestions.

🎯 Why This Matters

These tools are part of WordPress’s Phase 3: Collaboration roadmap. The goal is to make WordPress:

  • More intelligent — enabling AI to assist with tasks
  • More connected — easily integrated with different AI providers
  • More user-friendly — allowing anyone to build with AI, not just coders

By the time WordPress 7.0 is released, the aim is for any user — blogger, developer, or designer — to build and use AI-powered tools to support their content, workflows, and websites.

🧩 What’s Next?

Some of these AI features may become part of WordPress Core, while others might remain as official (canonical) plugins. Decisions about what goes where will be made through community discussions in #core-ai on WordPress Slack and upcoming meetings.

The team is encouraging contributions, feedback, and collaboration as these tools continue to evolve.
