What’s Coming in WordPress 7

WordPress 7 is expected in April 2026.

Here are the key updates.

1. AI foundations in WordPress

WordPress 7 introduces a new AI Client and Connectors system.

This creates a standard way for WordPress to connect to external AI services such as OpenAI, Claude, and Gemini.

It also gives plugin developers a shared framework for handling connections, API keys, and integrations with external services.

2. Collaboration

WordPress 7 includes real-time collaboration in the editor.

This means multiple people can work on the same page or post at the same time, with changes syncing as they happen.

The editor also shows who else is currently editing.

3. Navigation Menus are better

Navigation gets a significant update in WordPress 7.

There is now built-in support for customizable mobile menu design, giving users more control over how menus look and behave on smaller screens.

This includes:

  • Ready-made patterns for faster setup
  • More flexible submenu behaviour
  • Previewing mobile menus in the sidebar
  • The ability to create pages directly from the Navigation block

4. Pre-built layouts (patterns) are easier to edit

Patterns are pre-built layouts you can insert into a page, such as hero sections, testimonials, pricing areas, or call-to-action blocks.

In WordPress 7, patterns are being treated more like single design objects.

Instead of moving through lots of individual blocks, users can edit text and images from a cleaner inspector panel designed around content.

If needed, patterns can still be detached and edited block by block.

5. New design tools and blocks

WordPress 7 includes several new design features, including:

  • New Breadcrumbs block
  • New Icon block
  • Video backgrounds in Hero Sections (cover blocks)
  • A more flexible Grid block (you can now set a maximum number of columns while still allowing layouts to adjust responsively)
  • Custom CSS for individual blocks

6. Responsive controls (show or hide content on mobile)

Blocks can now be shown or hidden depending on screen size.

This means you can choose whether specific content appears on desktop, tablet, or mobile.

This makes it easier to tailor layouts for different devices without relying on custom workarounds.

7. Visual revisions

Revisions are now built directly into the editor in a more visual way.

Users can move through earlier versions with a timeline and see changes highlighted inside the content itself, rather than comparing raw code or using a separate screen.

8. Admin and workflow updates

WordPress 7 also includes a number of workflow and interface updates, such as:

  • A dedicated Fonts management page
  • A Command Palette entry in the admin bar
  • Smoother view transitions in the admin
  • Updated styling across WP Admin

9. Media and editing improvements

A number of smaller editing improvements are also included, such as:

  • Better image editing controls
  • Gallery lightbox navigation
  • Easier colour value pasting in colour pickers
  • Anchor support for dynamic blocks
  • Width and height controls in block dimensions

What this release shows

WordPress 7 points to a few clear themes:

  • More collaborative editing
  • More built-in foundations for AI
  • More control over navigation and responsive design
  • A simpler editing experience for patterns and design tools

The beta is still for testing, so some details may still change before the final release.
