PootleWriter has had a major upgrade

Time to read:

3–4 minutes

PootleWriter is a frictionless, always-on writing app for WordPress.

Instead of logging into wp-admin every time you want to write, edit, or publish something, you can open PootleWriter and start creating straight away. No dashboard clutter. No hunting through menus. Just open the app and write.

It connects directly to your WordPress site, so your posts still end up exactly where they should: in WordPress.

The original idea behind PootleWriter was simple: what if publishing to WordPress felt more like using a modern writing app?

Fast. Calm. Focused.

This update is the biggest step toward that vision so far.

A much better writing experience

Writing in PootleWriter now feels far more natural.

The editor has been completely rebuilt using the same open-source editing technology used by apps like Notion, making formatting feel smoother, faster, and far more reliable.

What you see while writing is what gets published, so there’s no second-guessing how things will look once they hit your website.

Want to format text? Just highlight it.

A clean floating toolbar appears exactly where you need it, letting you add headings, links, lists, quotes, bold, italics, and more without interrupting your flow.

The goal here is simple: spend less time fighting the editor and more time writing.

Slash commands make writing faster

One of my favourite additions is slash commands.

Type / anywhere in a post and you’ll instantly get a quick insert menu.

Need an image? Heading? Divider? Quote? Video?

Just type / and keep going.

It feels much faster than hunting through buttons or opening endless sidebars.

Images are now much easier

Adding images should feel effortless, so PootleWriter now supports drag-and-drop uploads directly into the editor.

You can also paste image URLs or upload manually if you prefer.

Behind the scenes, images are automatically resized before upload to help keep your WordPress media library lightweight and your site speedy.

You can even set your featured image while writing, without needing to jump into WordPress afterwards.

Video embeds that just work

If you’ve ever copied weird embed code into WordPress, you’ll appreciate this one.

Now, simply paste a YouTube or Vimeo URL and PootleWriter automatically turns it into an embedded video.

No fiddling. No extra steps.

Just paste and carry on writing.

Categories without opening WordPress

You can now assign categories before publishing.

PootleWriter pulls categories directly from your WordPress site, so everything stays synced without needing to open wp-admin.

Small thing, but surprisingly useful.

Publish live or save as draft

Sometimes you want to hit publish immediately.

Sometimes you want to review things later.

Now you can choose.

Publish directly to your WordPress site, or send posts as drafts ready for editing and approval.

Better post management

Managing content is now much cleaner too.

You can quickly jump between drafts, see publication status, and pick up exactly where you left off.

The whole experience feels more like a modern writing tool and less like a CMS admin screen.

Dark mode (because writing at night exists)

PootleWriter now ships with dark mode built in, with a light mode option if you prefer things brighter.

Your preference is remembered, so once it’s set, it stays set.

Your content stays yours

One thing that matters to me with PootleWriter is privacy and ownership.

Your content goes directly to your WordPress site. There’s no middle layer storing your posts somewhere else.

You own your content, your site, and your workflow.

PootleWriter started as a simple idea: make WordPress publishing feel effortless.

This update gets us a lot closer.

If you’re already using PootleWriter, I’d love to hear what you think. And if you haven’t tried it yet, now feels like a good time.
