    Ah ha!
I fixed it by changing the .htaccess file from:
    # BEGIN WordPress

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]

    # END WordPress

    to

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule ^(.+)$ /index.php/$1 [L,QSA]

That fixed the permalink problem after changing its prettiness.

Then going into Settings/Reading and selecting my first menu item (Welcome Page) as the First Page; that starts the site on the right page. I also republished all the pages.
I got the .htaccess code from a guy in the USA

PS I used the “WordPress Database Backup” by Austin Matzko to do the DB backup, easy to use and it can email you the backup, magic!

Not really. We seem to be stuck in ‘landscape land’ with all images being the same size. Do you know of a Gallery plugin that supports different sized images?

Meanwhile I demonstrated WordPress to a guy called Phil Ions and tried to interest him in your Academy and Training. Watch this space.

Hi, I tried plain text and it works!
Then I tried editing it in the editor to reduce the text size, then pasted the HTML back into the footer. It isn’t rendered on the site. For now its full size. Thanks anyway, bit worrying through as I want to put links in to my website and also internal pages like privacy policy
Maybe sort it on Friday? Thanks Brian

    Hi Jamie, Hallelulya
    0. backed up the Theme content
    1. deactivated all the pluging,
    2. deleted the tinyMCE Table plug in,
    3. installed the tinyMCE-advanced
    4. activated the Aksimet and TinyMCE plugins again
    Bingo it works
    Many thanks Brian

Hi Jamie, I had installed the plugin MCE Table Buttons,
    Tried deactivating it, no change
    Tried activating it, no change

Is it worth exporting the website settings,
    Ditching the Canvas Theme
    Then reloading the Canvas Theme

    Would that make sense?
    Thanks Brian

Hi, tried the box checked and unchecked,
Editor still has no tabs and is stoically sticking to HTML
( was HTML designed by a cryptic crossword setter? )
