When trying to set up a multisite install, wordpress asks me to do this…

“We recommend you change your siteurl to xxxxxxxx.com before enabling the network feature. It will still be possible to visit your site using the www prefix with an address like www.xxxxxx.com but any links will not have the www prefix.”

When I do this I loose the link to the dashboard. Do I need to change my URL and if so why?

    Thanks

    Hi,

However, you shouldn’t lose your link to the dashboard.

WordPress multi-site install work this way e.g

    http://pootlepress.co.uk/cheltenham

    http://pootlepress.co.uk/oxford

Putting www will still resolve to the website so it shouldn’t be a problem.

    Thanks Jamie,

I’ve got the network created now and the dashboard shows, but when I try to add new sites through network admin “add new sites” (subdomains, as each will need its own domain name mapping) I get “missing or invalid site address. Any suggestions?

Ok, cancel that request. I seem to have been successful with one of the ways I tried. Just took a while for it to show up. Thanks Jamie

Hi, you might need to go into php admin and change back manually in there
