I am struggling to wrap my brain around child themes. I am using Canvas and have used the Custom CSS box a lot. I have also done a couple of tweaks where I added snippets to various pages. What I get is that child themes eliminate the need for the snippets.

Where I get stuck is how to actually add a child theme to the backend. The video talks about a plug-in, but I think that is no longer valid with new Canvas.

I signed up for one of those sites that is supposed to do all my updates each month, as I have had some heinous updates as you may imagine. They have not updated Canvas as they ere waiting on me to get the child themes. They quoted me $300 to add them and nope, that seems way too high.

So, how do I add child themes using your plug-ins? Really, I just have the one top put social media at top right and my email and phone number up there.

I know I will face plant with a Homer Simpson “DOH” when you tell me what to do…

    THANK Kathy!

    Hi Kathy,

We’ve got a free Canvas child theme which you can get here

However if you just want to put social media and email then here’s a tutorial

I got that part, I am just a little confused as to what to DO with it after that. Do I FTP it, it would not upload within the Plug-Ins…

Sorry to be dense, but I have looked and Googled and there seems to be an info gap. I want to update Canvas and thought I might as well get my child themes in place so I don’t have to recreate the stuff I do every time.

    Thanks!

    Kathy

    Hi Kathy,

    Don’t worry :)

You need to upload it to your themes and activate it :)

ps if you use jetpack instead of a child theme that is ok , as when you update canvas your css changes won’t be overwritten.
